How to use a word search in an ESL lesson
Introduce or review the meanings before learners search for spellings. For a first attempt, use fewer words and horizontal or vertical directions. After checking the grid, ask pairs to choose two words and explain their meanings. Finding a spelling is a useful review task, but it does not by itself show that a learner understands the word.
Print the worksheet and its answer key
Choose A4 or US Letter and a print style in the editor. Turn on Include answer key when you need a separate teacher page showing the word locations. Download the PDF, print a student copy without the answer page, and keep the key for checking or pair feedback.
Choose a topic before increasing the challenge
Start with familiar vocabulary such as animals, school supplies or fruit. A larger grid or diagonal directions changes the puzzle challenge, not the reading level of the words. Preview the result for your group and generate again after changing settings.
